My Love Life

This was an Installation I made for a show at the Nierman Museum/Johnson county community college in Kansas City 2005. The Signs are songs evocative of a lover I had had and the logs have records inside. I was imagining what music had formed the part of me that was attractive to that specific lover. The wall painting was floating graffitti of song titles that referenced unattainable perfection..

Portrait of Bill

I made 2 of these log/record portraits in 2005, one was of myself and the other was of my best friend Bill Arning.

I had forgotten about them until recently when they were returned to me from my previous gallery, Derek Eller. I had made them for Derek to show at the Armory art fair but they never shown there.

The self portrait was just sold and installed last weekend, now I have Bill's portrait out in my studio and it's my favorite thing there.

These 2 portraits were made at the same time as the "My Love Life " Installation that I made at the Nierman museum in Kansas City.

Light and Magic

I've been working on some drawings for Scott Hug's K-48 magazine, the them is magic and I keep thinking of the Ladytron song "light and Magic" so that's pretty much all I've been listening to in the studio for the past week or so.

Paris 1-2006

I just ran across these snapshots of me in my studio at Cite des Arts in Paris from the winter of 2006. It was a gift that just dropped into my lap out of the blue. I'm going to try and get back there again soon.

A Year of playlists

In 2007 I made one drawing each month of the music I was listening to. Regency Arts Press published it as a book and all 12 drawings were exhibited at printed matter in April '08

Sparks

These Watercolor & Gouache pieces I did in 2003 and they were shown the following spring at MoMA/PS1 in a show called 'The Curious Crystals....." It was curated by Steve LaFreniere and Bob Nickas. I was thinking of the way music just takes up so much space, it's huge.

When I first came to NYC in the 1980's so many of the subway trains were covered in these massive graffiti pieces and it was so exciting when they would pull into the station, you never knew what you were gonna see and even though so many of these pieces were giant, they were painted with these dramatic 3d effects to make them look even more massive, bigger than big. Combined with the noise that these trains would make pulling in, this was some pretty powerful art.

Disco Branch

I denied myself the pleasure of listening to disco when I was younger. For starters, I was known in Minneapolos as the guy with one of the best punk rock record collections so therefore i got a job DJing at the local punk club and I wouldnt have been caught dead admitting to a liking of disco. I was straight, disco was for gay people, 'nuff said..if i could have just trusted my taste and not been afraid of what people thought of me by liking disco and admitted to myself who I was, I could have had a lot more fun. These branches are a way to reclaim some of the beauty I denied myself...
