A Song For Europe

This was my first Spiral Painting. I made it on the 3rd or 4th day of my residency in Paris. I went there not knowing at all what I was going to be doing or making during the 3 months that I would be at the Cite des Artes. The day I arrived they asked what I did and as I fumbled trying to describe my work they said..."We'll give you a painter's studio" It was great, so I went out and bought a canvas, but had no idea what I wanted to paint. Then I went to check out the Margiela store and as soon as I walked in they took off the opera music and played this song by Roxy Music. I remembered I first heard it when I was 15 or so and living in Minneapolis, and the lyrics described being by the Seine in the shadow of Notre Dame, it gave me some very strong pictures of what europe must be like and then it dawned on me, the Cite des Artes was on the Seine by Notre Dame...Voila...I became a painter
