In Your Mind...

I was thinking of Warhol's portraits of Mick Jagger from the 1070's and the music I was listening to at that time

Coming Around To The Velvet Underground

When I first started to DJ at the punk club in Minneapolis around 1979 the guy who hired me, Peter Jesperson would recommend music to me at his record shop Oar Folkjokepus and one day he recommended The Velvet Underground and Nico. I liked the Warhol cover so I bought it, took it home and put it on…….I hated it, could not stand the druggy undertones of all the music and Lou Reed's voice bugged the shit out of me. I never played it again. Then about 6 years ago I was running around stores in soho with my friend Bill Arning and Pale Blue Eyes came on in the shop that we were in. I asked Bill and his then BF John who this was, they looked at me incredulously and thought I was kidding. They told me it was the Velvet Underground and I started to think how that music, like starlight, took such a long time to reach me. I guess I had to hear all the bands that were influenced by them first or something…..crazy huh?

Voila

One of my favorite words in the entire french language. I'm interested in the feeling of discovery, the experience of discovering something which helps explain what was previously unknown. More Importantly, maybe this is about the amazing stuff that is right there in front of you, all you have to do is open your eyes and connect

Nearer

These are the four sides of the original vinyl of "Judy Live at Carnegie Hall". It's a kind of portrait of my highschool girlfriend Roberta. This was her favorite album, she knew all the words and she'd be running her house doing all these routines and then we'd go see the Ramones or some other punk band and she was just as into that as Judy Garland. Roberta is still one of my closest friends and I loved this dichotomy in her, that she could be just as moved something as show buzzy as Judy Garland and something as raw and minimal (but ultimately just as theatrical) as the Ramones.

R.E.M. - Out of Time

I'm just starting to get into the R.E.M. albums. I've got all of their hits, I love their sound. A friend of mine is a fanatic, a real fan and he recommended this album "Out of Time" so I listened to it for the first time and while each song played I made one of the flowers that's on this branch. So this piece is a record of my first experience listening to this album "Out of Time".
